Patterns of Light
1.5 Ether 12:4-“ Whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world…which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast.”
Coming to believe in God brings us hope, not only for ourselves but for those around us. If we can believe that God is truly in charge, that “nothing absolutely nothing happens in God’s world by mistake” (AA, 449), we can have hope for our loved ones. We can even accept (not condone) the evil we see in our world, knowing Jesus Christ and His atonement are powerful enough to overcome it. Christ is an anchor to our souls. In Him, our sanity is secure.
When I first read that quote, “Nothing happens in God’s world by mistake” I was tempted to think,”Yeah, but that’s the point –this isn’t Gods world. Satan rules here.” Almost instantly, I felt the lie in that thought. This is still God’s world, and the fact is that everything which happens here happens with His allowance and can be used for His own benevolent purposes. Even Satan’s part is planned into God’s world.
Suddenly, I could see that, in that sense, there are no mistakes. Eve didn’t make a mistake. She was fulfilling Heavenly Father’s purposes for this earthly experience. In Genesis 45:8, this truth surfaces again in the scriptures. Joseph testifies to his brothers that it was not really their hand which sent him into Egypt, but God’s. No mistake was made, even in their unrighteous intentions or actions God has the power to weave even such choices into His own purposes. In the final truth, we are never outside the will of God.
Ponder and prayerfully write about this idea of believing God when he instructs his prophet (King Benjamin) to declare:
Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he ... [has] all power, both in heaven and in earth.(Mosiah 4:9)
Focus on the idea of all power and both in heaven and in earth. Does this feel like an anchor to your soul? Does it help to know that ultimately God is in charge and that His purposes will be fulfilled, even though or despite your mistakes? Make a list of some of the positive experiences you’ve had as a result of actions you thought were mistakes.
